I grew up in an intentional spiritual community in West Virginia. Many called it a hippie commune. My family eventually moved south, and I attended a public high school in Atlanta, and then a small college in New England. At twenty-one, I boarded a plane for the People’s Republic of China, and the time that I spent there awakened me, turned me inside out, and transformed my life.
I wrote Double Happiness to share my experiences, with a hope that the inward and outward discoveries I made while teaching and journeying in the Middle Kingdom could be of use to others. The book took me ten years to write, and I’m delighted to share it with you and with the world. If you think you might like me, and you enjoy reading, you might just love the adventure of Double Happiness.
After China, I returned home with new eyes, a broader mind, and a deeper heart. I see my family, my community, my city, and my country differently.
My writings currently focus on politics, spirituality, and social justice, towards seeing and speaking the deepest truths I am able to see. So many other brave writers inspire me today, and I consider it an honor to be able to lend my words in support of those working hard for the future of our democracy, our species, and our planet.
When I’m not writing, I’m engineering front-end internet applications here in the Bay Area, playing guitar and soccer with friends, and traveling as often as I can with my wife.
